Most creators create their careers in their native tongue (English, in my case). But a lot forget to include the translation strings for the other languages supported by the game. This makes the career appear blank to anybody using the career in a game without an appropriate string included, and so they cannot enjoy the career.
If you find this happens to you, you can fix it for yourself. I would then advise you to notify the creator so they can make the appropriate changes.
Translating an existing career
It's really easy to translate careers, but it can be quite time-consuming. But if you're interested, then download the Language Strings file. I make this available on the download pages for each of my careers, but if a creator hasn't made this available, then feel free to ask them.
Once you have the file, open it up in Notepad.
You'll see text like this:
So you need to translate all the text in the <STR></STR> lines of code into your language. Do this for the entire file.
If you need to add gender-specific titles to careers that don't already have them, add this to the file:
Obviously, add this underneath the male title name. And be sure to let the creator know you've added the extra titles.
Once you're done, save and send the translation to the creator. This can be done however the creator prefers; either by email, or linked to a file uploader like 4Shared or Mediafire and PMed to them.
But what if there are no language strings in the career I'm using?
Don't panic! You can fix this for yourself.
All you need to do is add the language string for your language. So ensure you have S3PE installed and open the career you're using up.
Find the file that will look like this: ComicArtist English
It may have a different language, but it will be a STBL file. Copy that and go to Resource --> Paste to add another copy into the career package.
This brings up a window. Change the name, but only change the language to the one you're adding.
Press the FNV64 button but DON'T SAVE YET!
You'll need to edit the first two Instance numbers first. Here's a complete list of the numbers and their corresponding languages:
English = 00
Chinese = 01
Taiwanese = 02
Czech = 03
Danish = 04
Dutch = 05
Finnish = 06
French = 07
German = 08
Greek = 09
Hungarian = 0A
Italian = 0B
Japanese = 0C
Korean = 0D
Norwegian = 0E
Polish = 0F
PortugueseStandard = 10
PortugueseBrazillian = 11
Russian = 12
SpanishStandard = 13
SpanishMexican = 14
Swedish = 15
Thai = 16
So if you're translating into German, for example, you'd change the first two numbers to 08. So then the Instance number should look a little like this: 0x086E0CBD3AE72D99
Make sense?
You can then press OK.
Now Right-Click the new file and press Edit STBL.
You can now translate the file into your chosen language. Edit the text in the larger panel on the right and go through the entire file. Once you've finished, press save and save the whole file. Replace the career in your mods folder and your game should now be in the correct language for your game.
If you have any problems, please feel free to ask away!
