Can somebody who knows tell me if custom careers work in custom, non EA worlds or is there something extra that needs to be done to enable them there?

The custom careers work just fine in all worlds, both EA and custom

Ah, I see. Perhaps you can give me a tip then. I was in Builder's Island to test a few things and I tried placing a building with a police rabbit hole door and placed a sim. The sim was able to sign up for police but not Fringe (my custom career stationed at the police and all the combos containing it) which I know works. So, I placed a small police rabbit hole building onto the now empty lot from the Build Mode Community Objects > Buildings but again the sim could join police but not Fringe. THe lot was set as either Visitors Allowed or No Visitors Allowed, I forget which. Any ideas? I'd like to one day create a custom world so I'm looking into things before that should be aware off and custom careers is one that already wondered about.

Oh that's an easy one. When you place a new Rabbithole Building, door or rug, the custom careers never show up. Save your game, quit to main menu and reload the save game. The custom careers show up there after. Creating your own world and using the custom careers is do-able (I've done it myself).

Let me seek your advice on a few questions since you've done it before. If I create my own world with a more unique theme the EA rabbit holes don't really fit into is it possible to create custom buildings using rabbit hole doors or rugs so that your custom career is available in the town or must you use default EA rabbit holes for that? And either way, then do the custom careers work as soon as a person starts a new game or must they save and quit then reload there also?

The rugs and doors work GREAT with the custom careers and I cannot recommend them enough. They're perfect for projects like this and the custom careers function exactly the same with them. The careers work straight away when you load a new game. It's only when you add a new rabbithole building/rug/door while playing (so through Edit Town) that they don't show up immediately. That's when you need to save, quit and reload Out of interest, what kind of world are you doing? I love CAW projects!

I'm not entirely decided but have narrowed it down to a few possibilities, the main one I'm leaning toward is a sort of Skyrim like world. Good to hear they'll work just the same then! That sure gives me more lead way in creativity

I still haven't quite got to my custom world, though have made at least 1 very suitable building and when I did a little test with a rabbit hole door/rug ?I named the lot something I wanted like say Palace and yet it still said some basic sims name on the icon like Town Hall. Does anyone know if there is a way to change the name to a custom one?
